CalFresh
Is CalFresh right for my family?CalFresh can help your family get access to healthy food. You can use CalFresh benefits at most grocery stores and even farmers markets to buy items such as bread, nuts, rice, and more.
Who is eligible for CalFresh?
CalFresh is open to families who are U.S. citizens and legal residents. It’s also open to people with a qualified immigration status. People 60+ and disabled may have a higher income and still qualify.
What documents will I need to apply?
- Copy of your ID
- Proof of any income
- Proof of immigration status (for non-citizens)
Optional but can increase your benefit amount:
- Proof of child support paid
- If you are 60+ or disabled, proof of medical expenses

CalWORKs
Is CalWORKs right for my family?
The California Work Opportunity and Responsibility to Kids (CalWORKs) program provides cash benefits for the care of children in need when one or both parents are absent, disabled, deceased or unemployed.
Who is eligible for CalWORKs?
CalWORKs benefits may be extended to qualifying non-citizens who have a child or children in the home. Non-citizens can include refugees, parolees, victims of trafficking or battered non-citizens. If you are eligible for CalWORKs, you automatically qualify for Medi-Cal and you might qualify for CalFresh (formerly known as Food Stamps) as well.
How to Apply for CalWORKs
You can apply for CalWORKs by phone (800-281-9799), in person at select Social Services Agency office locations, or online at BenefitsCal.com
- If you would like to apply for CalWORKs and you are a minor (under 18 years of age), never married, and either pregnant or have a child, then you must live with your parent(s), and your parent(s) must apply for you unless you meet an exception.
- CalWORKs applicants can apply for CalFresh (formerly known as Food Stamps) and Medi-Cal benefits when they apply for CalWORKs by using the same form.
- CalWORKs applicants will talk with an applicant worker after they have completed and submitted their application forms.
- However, if an emergency situation exists, the applicant should explain the situation and ask for help right away.

Is Medi-Cal right for my family?
Medi-Cal provides free or low-cost health care to people who qualify. It can help pay for doctor visits, hospital care, immunization (vaccines), pregnancy-related services, nursing home care, and other services.
Who is eligible for Medi-Cal?
Medi-Cal provides free or low-cost health coverage for individuals (adults and children) and families who qualify. To qualify for Medi-Cal, you must live in the state of California and meet certain rules, such as having income under the Medi-Cal limit. You may qualify for health insurance even if you are not a U.S. citizen or a U.S. national.
What documents will I need to apply?
- Proof of California residency
- Household income (earned and unearned)
- Tax filing status (for everyone in your household)
- Property/Asset information
- Social Security Number (SSN)
- Citizenship/Immigration Status
