Academic Tutoring

Tutoring is available to students at the Anaheim Learning Center or online. Come visit the Learning Center or schedule an online one-on-one tutoring session today!

  For privacy and confidentiality, find a private and quiet location where you can communicate comfortably. We recommend you log in using a private computer.

  Be sure to update your phone number and email in myGateway. You will receive instructions if there are technical difficulties and your counselor needs to use another option for communication (such as Zoom or a phone call).

NOCE students from any program are welcome to use the services in the NOCE Learning Center. All you need is a Student ID!

The NOCE High School Diploma Program helps adults obtain their High School Diploma or equivalent by providing academic support and convenient classes for students.

High School Diploma Program 

The NOCE High School Diploma Program is for adults 18 or older to obtain their High School Diploma. The High School Diploma Program is tuition free.

GED/Hi-SET Program 

The NOCE GED/HiSET Program is for adults 18 or older to obtain their GED or Hi/SET certificate. The GED/HiSET Program is tuition free.

College Preparation Program 

The NOCE College Preparation Program provides students with an opportunity to develop their critical thinking and language skills to succeed in college-level credit courses. Noncredit College Prep Math and English courses are for students to build their foundational level mathematical, reading, and writing skills. The College Prep Program is tuition-free.

Basic Skills CASAS Assessment Information

CASAS Assessment Paused this Summer

Attention students in the High School Diploma and GED/HiSET Preparation Programs — The Basic Skills CASAS Assessment labs will be closed from May 22, 2026, to July 31, 2026.

Both in-person and online CASAS testing will be paused during the 2026 summertime period. CASAS testing will resume on Monday, August 3, 2026. Students may enroll and begin their program of study this summer without delay.

All HSDP and GED Prep students: please plan to take your CASAS pre- and post-test beginning August 3, 2026, once the Basic Skills CASAS Assessment labs reopen.

High School Diploma vs. GED/HiSET

The choice between earning a high school diploma or a high school equivalency certificate (GED/HiSET) depends on your personal needs. However, here are some important factors to consider in making your decision:

The ESL College Success Program is designed for Intermediate-Advanced students who are interested in transitioning to college or vocational programs. 

The ESL College Success Program certificates are for students at higher levels who wish to transition to a Career Technical Education (CTE) Program or High School Diploma Program at NOCE, or to a college or university to continue their education. The ESL College Success classes focus on strengthening English skills for success in an academic setting.

ESL College Success Program Classes 

Benefits of the ESL College Success Program

Certificate of Completion – Students will receive a state-approved Certificate of Completion after passing each set of courses. Students are also able to participate in the annual NOCE Student Success Event. 

Credits toward other program requirements – ESLA 1065 will count toward the high school diploma requirement for English 1 or 2, or 10 elective credits. ESLA 1060, 1062, and 1067 may receive elective credits only.

Activities geared toward higher education goals – Students get to participate in the following activities while taking courses in the ESL College Success Program:

• Counselor presentations
• College orientation
• Cypress College campus field trip
• Fullerton College campus field trip

Our ESL Specialty classes provide extra support and practice with specific skills to develop language fluency.

Whether you need help with computer skills or English pronunciation, the ESL Specialty classes are available to all students online and in-person. These classes are recommended to help students get the extra practice they need to advance in their ESL Program classes or in their personal life. For most topics, there are now separate classes available for students in the Beginning or Intermediate/Advanced levels. 

ESL Specialty Classes We Offer Include:

• ESL Computer Skills

  The Beginning level includes the following basic skills:

  • Computer parts
  • Keyboarding
  • Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Print Shop

  The emphasis for the beginning level is to build confidence in computer use to improve English skills.

  The Intermediate-Advanced level includes the following enhanced computer application tasks using:

  • Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher
  • Print Shop
  • The Internet

  The emphasis for the Intermediate-Advanced level is to build confidence in independent projects to improve English skills. Students will be actively involved in computer projects linking the academic environment with their communities.
• ESL Speaking Skills

  Designed for Intermediate to Advanced ESL learners to improve their English, this course includes:

  • Conversation practice

  Pronunciation practice   
  
  Coming soon:  Beginning Pronunciation/Conversation Skills
• Reading and Writing

  These courses are designed for Beginning and Intermediate/Advanced students.

  The Reading class focuses on:

  • Comprehension
  • Vocabulary skills
  • Critical thinking skills
  • The Writing class focuses on: Sentence structure
  • Prewriting
  • Outlining
  • Drafting
  • Revising
  • Editing
• Grammar Review

  This course has been divided into separate classes for Beginning or Intermediate/Advanced ESL Program students. Students will learn to understand grammar structures in everyday situations. They will focus on practicing grammar in:

  • oral communication
  • written communication

  Note: These courses supplement core ESL Program courses or work as stand-alone courses.
• Vocabulary Review

  This course is divided into separate classes for Beginning or Intermediate/Advanced ESL Program students. Students will review, expand, and retain basic vocabulary words and phrases.
