Canvas Cyber Incident Outage and Update

Update 12:28 p.m., May 8, 2026:

NOCCCD Alert: Canvas is back online. Please access Canvas through our official login page at https://mg.nocccd.edu/ or noce.edu/mygateway. Do not enter your username or password on any Canvas page that does not redirect you through NOCCCD’s official MyGateway login page that requires multi-factor authentication.

Update 11:25 a.m., May 8, 2026:

We are aware that Canvas services are currently showing as available. At this time, our teams continue to work closely with system partners and cybersecurity officials to ensure that access can be restored safely and securely. Our current target is to bring Canvas back online by the end of the day today, Friday, May 8, 2026, provided there are no additional concerns identified. We are following guidance from the state chancellor’s office.

Importantly, at this time, we have no indication of any loss of data.

Once Canvas access is restored, users should log in through myGateway and utilize Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) to help ensure safe and secure access to District systems.

As always, please remain vigilant with cybersecurity best practices:

Do not click on links you are unfamiliar with.
Be cautious when opening files or attachments you were not expecting.
Report suspicious emails or activity through the appropriate campus channels.

We understand the disruption this situation has caused and appreciate your patience and flexibility as we proceed carefully and responsibly. We will continue to keep the campus community updated as additional information becomes available.We will send a communication once Canvas has been restored.

Update 3:34 p.m., May 7, 2026:

Canvas is currently inaccessible. DO NOT attempt to log into Canvas until further notice. If you navigated to the Canvas site and were met with an option to download a file, DO NOT download or open the file. We are actively monitoring updates and will send more information when it becomes available.

Original Post:

The Canvas learning management system is currently offline as of approximately 1:30 p.m. on May 7, 2026. We believe the outage is a result of Instructure, Canvas’ parent organization, taking the LMS down as the result of a continuing cyber incident. At this moment, NOCCCD systems are not experiencing a cyber incident.

We encourage everyone to stay alert online. Phishing and scams often spike after a data breach. The bad actor’s goal is usually to trick you into giving up passwords, clicking malicious links, or sending money. Here’s how to spot and avoid them:

Phishing & Scam Safety (Quick Guide)

Don’t trust urgency
Messages pushing “act now” or threatening consequences are often scams.
Avoid clicking links
Go directly to official websites instead of using email/text links. Check URLs for subtle misspellings.
Verify the sender
Look at the actual email address—not just the name. Be wary of non-official domains and misspelled company names.
Never share sensitive info
No legitimate source will ask for passwords, MFA codes, or full personal data via email/text.
Be cautious of offers
“Too good to be true” jobs, scholarships, or requests involving money (especially gift cards) are common scams.
Don’t open unexpected attachments
Don’t be so quick to open files like .zip, .exe, or unusual documents without verifying the authenticity of the trusted sender.
Double-check requests
Confirm through a trusted channel (official website, phone, or known contact).
Use MFA
Use multifactor authentication whenever possible.

This situation is evolving and we will share more information as we become aware. Updates may be shared via email, on myGateway, and/or on campus platforms such as the website, RAVE alert, and social media alerts.

NOCE Participates in Spring Emergency Drill

NOCE will participate in spring emergency preparedness drills focusing on active shooter response

Drills will be slightly different at each NOCE Center:

NOCE/NOCCCD Anaheim Campus – will host drills on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, at both 10 a.m. and 7 p.m.
NOCE Wilshire/Fullerton College – will host a morning drill on Thursday, April 16, 2026, at 10 a.m.
NOCE Cypress/Cypress College – will host a morning drill on Thursday, April 23, 2026, at 10:15 a.m.

*Each drill should last about 10 minutes

The drills will prepare our campus communities for readiness and response to such an event. The drill will include emergency protocols, such as lockdown and shelter-in-place, watching a video, discussing with class or office colleagues, and testing emergency communications. 

Emergency Notifications at North Orange Continuing Education

Faculty, staff, and students will receive notifications from North Orange Continuing Education during emergencies and during emergency drills. The campus safety alert system uses the phone and e-mail addresses entered in Banner or MyGateway. Faculty, staff, and students are encouraged to use MyGateway to update their personal information for emergency notifications. Here’s What Students Need to Know

Canvas access has been restored after this morning’s outage caused by an AWS incident. The system is now operational, and engineers are actively monitoring to ensure everything remains stable. If you were affected earlier, your access should return shortly.

What to Do Now:

Log in to Canvas and check each course’s Announcements, Modules, and Due Dates.
Follow any instructions from your instructors. Some may adjust deadlines or reopen quizzes and assignments that were impacted.
If your class met outside of Canvas (such as on Zoom), look for an email or update from your instructor with materials or next steps.

Still Having Trouble?

Clear your browser cache and try logging out and back into Canvas.
If issues continue, email your instructor and include a screenshot and a brief description of the problem.

2025 Fall Schedule is Now Available!

NOCE’s 2025 Fall Semester class schedule is now available online at www.noce.edu/schedule

Schedules will be mailed to North Orange County homes the week of June 23, 2025. Fall semester classes begin Monday, August 11, 2025.

NOCE Registration Dates for 2025 Fall Semester:

Registration opens at 8 a.m. on both dates. Visit www.noce.edu/register for more information.

Registration for Emeritus courses begins: Tuesday, July 15, 2025
Registration for all NOCE courses begins Wednesday, July 16, 2025

NOCE will offer several new courses this fall, including:

Career Exploration Classes – Workforce Preparation (page 53) in animal care, childcare, retail, and food service. These entry-level, tuition-free courses are open to all students and recommended for adults with disabilities to gain workplace skills, explore career paths, and prepare for future success — a perfect first step before Career Technical Education (CTE).
ESL for Work Certificates (page 66 and 73). Students who want to build employment skills enroll in two courses to earn the Employment Preparation A Certificate – Job Searches and Resume Writing; and Interview Skills. Or, students can complete two courses for the Employment Preparation B Certificate – U.S. Workplace Culture and Etiquette; and U.S. Workplace Operations and Financial Literacy. These are offered at Anaheim Campus, North Orange County ROP, and online.

Pre-College ESL Course in collaboration with Fullerton College (page 68). This mirrored course lets noncredit ESL students experience college credit classes—without the cost or pressure. As a noncredit student, they will attend the same Fullerton College class and complete the same assignments as credit students, earning a pass/no pass—no letter grade.
Emeritus Creative Writing and Guided Memoirs classes. These tuition-free writing courses are designed for adults 50+, but open to all, 18+ with a passion for writing and storytelling. The Creative Writing for Seniors course (page 78), although not new, the online option is new. Students can explore fiction, non-fiction, poetry and more. The new Guided Memoirs class (page 80) guides students to reflect, write, and share their life’s journey in a supportive group. Beginners are welcome!

NOCE is proud to offer these in-demand courses this fall semester:

College Preparation courses (page 24). Tuition-free courses to build confidence and core skills in math, reading, and writing. These flexible courses offer online and a new in-person option for the College Prep English course. Supportive instructors are great for students wanting to return to school, prepare for college, or strengthen a specific skill.
Office Assistant and Personal Care Aide certificates (page 29). Students can get job-ready with these tuition-free career technical education programs. As an office assistant, students can gain real-world skills for entry-level to advanced administrative jobs with a median salary of $20-$25/hour. Students will learn computer applications, customer service, information management, and soft skills like time management. The Office Assistant, Introduction certificate takes approximately nine months to complete. Another in-demand job, a personal care aide, is a rewarding career helping others live independently. In just four months, students can earn a certificate by learning personal care skills, health and safety skills, and tips for understanding and communicating with clients.

Career Pathways for English Learners (page 67) – ESL students can learn English and gain job skills at the same time! The Integrated Basic Education and Skills Training (IBEST) courses provide two teachers to help students achieve their goals faster. This semester, NOCE will offer IBEST courses in Office Assistant, Introduction. Students who complete the first half of the program will qualify for a volunteer office assistant role to gain real experience that could lead to a job.
The Parenting Program offers a variety of Child Wellness courses (pages 90-91) this fall semester, ranging from 4 to 6 weeks long, as well as a few one-day workshops. Topics include Raising Culturally Responsive Children; Understanding Adverse Childhood Experiences; Connected Parenting: Early Childhood and Infancy; Mental Wellness in the Home; Foster, Kinship, and Adoptive Families; Understanding Addictive Behaviors; Strengthening Families; and Internet Safety and Awareness. Students can complete a series of courses and earn a certificate.

Unfortunately, the Southern California region is experiencing three separate fires in Pasadena, Santa Monica, and Sylmar.

As of 7:30 a.m. today, Wednesday, January 8, 2025, all three NOCE Centers have been confirmed to be cleared for business as usual.

The 2025 Spring Semester is coming soon. Hotspot Return/Renewal Information

Attention Students with an Old Hotspot or Students in Need of a Hotspot

If you have an old hotspot (the AT&T Franklin A10s or the Moxees):

Please return it so we can issue you a newer model, provided you are currently enrolled in an online class.
Service on all older hotspot models will be turned off on November 29, 2024.

If you currently need a hotspot for your online or hybrid class:

2024 Summer Laptop Loan Renewals or Returns

2024 Summer Students Need to Renew or Return their Laptops:

Students who are NOT taking online/hybrid classes for the upcoming 2024 Fall Semester must return their laptops, along with the box they came in and the charger, to Room 714 of the Anaheim Campus the week of July 29 – August 2, 2024, or the week of August 5 – 9, 2024.

Students who ARE taking online/hybrid classes for the upcoming 2024 Fall Semester must renew their laptop for the following semester by notifying us via email at laptoploan@noce.edu or calling us at (714) 808-4706

What if I need a laptop again in the next semester?

You may request a laptop again two weeks before the semester begins by going to noce.edu/laptop.
What are the consequences of not returning a laptop?

If you are not enrolled in an online/hybrid course and have not returned your device, we may place a hold on your account throughout the district or disable your device.
What if my device has been lost or stolen?

Inform STSS at laptoploan@noce.edu or (714) 808-4706 as soon as possible. There are currently no fees for lost or damaged devices.
Do I need to also return my hotspot when I return my laptop?

Yes, hotspots are to be used with the laptops, so we need to make them available for students currently taking online/hybrid classes.
